Slavonish Settlement
About fourty or forth-two years ago, forty people of Slovonian birth came
to Galveston, Texas on their way to Shepherd. These people were
brought under contract to engage in the stave business. which was quite
extensively carried on for a short while in San Jacinto County.
The families of this group who have remained through the years are the
Janes, the Trohas, the Seatons and the Kovaks. Their business at
present os truck farming on a small scale. During the first few
years they were in the country, representives of these people made
regular trips to the land of their birth, butlately this practice has
been discontinued. They have proved to be good thrifty citizens
of this county.
